The Mayans of Mexico – A Guided Tour

If Mexico was a book then it would be a leather bound, magical volume hidden in a secret panel at the bottom of an ancient desk. The kind that children’s stories are based around and myths are written in. To me, there is nowhere in the world more enchanting. I looked at guided tours when planning my first Mexican adventure, hoping to pack as much into the two weeks as possible. Jungle ruins, pyramids and antique Colonial towns would all be covered in my chosen tour. It was to be the most exciting two weeks of my life.

No amount of reading and research quite prepared me for the hustle and bustle of Mexico City, and I was pleased to be experiencing it with a group and knowledgeable guides. Our city tour was a whirlwind ride through the sights, sounds and colours of contemporary Mexican life as well as a walk through its incredible history. The National Museum of Anthropology was the highlight for me, introducing us to the ancient sites and civilizations we were to explore later in the trip.

Aztec ruins don’t get any more impressive than Teotihuacan, our next stop on the tour. There we were dwarfed by the surrounding step pyramids, built around 100BC. Climbing all seventy meters of the Pyramid of the Sun is well worth it for the views over the ruined city. A walk down the central Avenue of the Dead is a chance to follow in the footsteps of ancient leaders and ceremonies. Astoundingly preserved murals and stonework decorate the ruins, giving glimpses into the splendour of the site during its golden age. Complicated geometric principles are clearly visible in the layout and construction of the architecture.

Mexican cuisine is as rich and colourful as its history. Chili, oregano and cocoa flavour the various moles (sauces) that are accompanied by soft tortillas or rice and beans. We were lucky enough to sample the famous chocolate based mole in Puebla, its town of origin.

Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, nestled between three central valleys and surrounded by ancient ruins. It is also the centre of contemporary Mexican art, and the streets are filled with galleries showcasing new and established talent.

A magic tree, the village of the dead and local artisans came before the water bound leg of the journey. Our boat cruised along the Grijalva River through the Sumidero Canyon, delivering us at San Cristobal. From here we explored traditional Indian villages and experienced the rural side of Mexico life. We were also let in on the secrets of coffee, chocolate and spice growing.

Concealed in dense jungle, the mysterious ruins of Palenque were the most magical on our tour. This was the Mexico I recalled from childhood history books and mythology. Once ruled by a dynasty of kings and queens, there is something deliciously atmospheric about this site and its surroundings.

Uxmal and Chichen Itza, both spectacular Mayan sites, were saved for the finale of the trip. The latter is surely the most famous, made up of pyramids, temples and tombs.

It’s Never Too Early to Think About Summer in Venice!

Is Venice the most beautiful city in the world? We’re not sure but it definitely comes pretty close. If you’re thinking about going around Italy anytime during the summer, you really need to add Venice to your list. The romantic charm of Venice has been marred by modern development over the years, but there’s there a lot of appreciate about this old city.

You need to make sure that if you go during the summer time, you really want to make sure that you are protecting yourself accordingly. Venice can be pretty hot. IF you really don’t want to go during the summer, we suggest making a Spring Break type trip to Venice. This means that there won’t be so many tourists and you’ll be able to get a lot more accomplished on your own than you might expect.

If you want to get around the city of Venice, a boat trip is definitely the preferred method. You can get around pretty easily, especially because there are no cars. Everything is done on the water, with plenty of water buses and water taxes. If you’re going to go to Venice for a while, you really want to make sure that you go with the water buses rather than the taxis. It’s a lot less expensive.

Even if you don’t want to take the boats, you going to be able to walk just about anywhere that you want to go. However, you really need to make sure that you pace yourself. It’s far too easy to wear yourself out and be unable to push yourself to see anyone of the city.

It’s going to take some time to get used to Venice, but it’s really wroth it.

While you’re on foot, you can soak in all of the different sites. If you are a fan of viewing old churches, you might want to make sure that you get a church pass. This will get you into the churches that actually charge a fee.

Museums are also a way of life here — there are plenty of museums to choose from, and you might find yourself looking for the best one. There’s just so many to choose from, and they’re covered by a multi-entry ticket.  We like the Correr Museum and the Doge’s Palace above all, but there’s also the La Fenice Theater that contains old history.

As you can see, this is definitely a city where you can check out a lot of older sights and sounds, as well as getting in a lot of outside time. Make sure that you don’t try to wear yourself out.

We really like the Rialto Bridge, which also features the farmer’s market on the west side. The farmer’s market can help you get a lot of fresh and interesting food, grown from around the region. If you’re interesting in “local food” movements, this is definitely where you want to be.

First and foremost, the Aussies definitely enjoy Christmas just as much as everyone else, even though it’s the warmest time of the year. This means that you will still see a lot of traditional Christmas stuff along with traditions that are truly Australian in nature. Just go with the flow — if you really want a traditional Australian Christmas, that’s perfectly okay — but make sure that you really do take the time to explore and maybe step out of your comfort zone a bit. For example, you will definitely see people grilling during this time of year. If you aren’t into that, then you can skip it but really, who isn’t into grilling?

Sydney is a very large city, with plenty of things to do. If you’re going to start from the top, you need to start with airfare. There are lots of great flights to Sydney that even can be combined into a package deal. This will give you the best in terms of accommodation, airfare, and even car hire if you’re interested in that. It’s better to think about all of the options that you want rather than just assuming that everything will fall into place on its own. If you want to start traveling around the start of the New Year, then now is definitely the best time to start planning. Last minute holiday trips are common to Sydney, but there might not be the same types of deals. It just deals on your willingness to do your search. If you’re reading this guide you should already have a passport and your forms for a visa, but if you need those items it’s time to get them. The visa process won’t be difficult at all, but you will make sure that you have it before you can actually enter the country.

If you can help it, you might want to have a stopover in another country before you actually get into Sydney — the flight from some countries can actually be quite lengthy, and that means that you will have a lot of time on your hands. Sometimes it’s nice to explore another city on the way, which is why Sydney often becomes a city that’s included on “round the world” type trips.

There’s a lot of ways to get around, but we really recommend the bus system or even using the taxis. Since Australia is fully urbanized and industrial in its own right, the transit system is actually quite good. The Cityrail is actually very fast and you can handle everything without much hassle or fuss.

So, what about the things to actually do in Sydney? After all, you’re on Christmas holiday and you want to have a good time. Well, you will have to first realize that many tourist attractions do indeed close down Christmas Day as well as Boxing Day, which is the day after. You will still find a few places that are open, but it’s going to be a bit more hit or miss.

This is actually where having a vacation home in Sydney is a smart thing. If you’re not going to go with a package deal, then you really want to look for a good vacation home. It will give you the benefit of having a kitchen to call home. That’s better than trying to figure out where you’re going to cook all of your food. Christmas in Sao Paulo – Oh Yes, Please!

We’re big fans of travel, but we get even more excited when it’s time to talk about cities that might not always get the first ink. We’re talking about thinking about Reno instead of Las Vegas, of Aberdeen instead of Glasgow, and of Florence instead of Rome. There are plenty of cities that might not get your attention at first but trust us — they’re worth falling in love with.

The winter months are terrible, but you might remember from geography class that the Southern Hemisphere enjoys summer at the time where most of us in the Northern Hemisphere sludge through winter. So if you really want a great experience, it’s going to need to be traveling south for the winter, like the birds do.

But you definitely want to think about Brazil, as you begin planning. Rio de Janiero is the first city that pops into mind for a lot of people, but it’s certainly not the only thing that Brazil has to offer. It’s time to think about Sao Paulo, or Sampa as it’s affectionately called.

Why are we crazy about Sampa right now? Because it’s big. Really big. Huge. Like, 11 million people huge. And that’s the core city — if we go by metro stats it’s nearly 20 million. With so many people, you know that there are plenty of things to do. The food, the nightlife, the shopping… Sampa attracts a lot of people from all over the world. The people are warm and friendly and laid back, which are all great characteristics for a city.

Getting into the city is easy by plane. There’s a large airport to accommodate flights, and finding transportation is easy. For a city like Sao Paulo, we definitely recommend that you stick to public transportation. The traffic is absolutely insane and tourists can find themselves very frustrated with the local residents of the city. They know the traffic pattern; you don’t. Why put yourself through stress if you don’t have to. There are plenty of options when it comes to public transportation, so don’t try to skip over them. They are quite important indeed. Be prepared for delays though — with so many people, it goes without saying that things can be pretty complicated!

If you go nowhere else, you have to go to Paulista Avenue within the city. This is really the heart and soul of the area, which plenty of shops, art galleries, theaters, movie theaters, and even pubs and coffee shops. Bookstores, hotels, and gourmet restaurants also reign supreme here. If you want to figure out a great place for your accommodations, it’s probably going to be somewhere around Paulista Avenue.

The shopping options are just right in the city — you will find plenty of great deals if you look around. Specific interests are catered to in the city, and can you blame anyone? Most business owners will eventually get a profit if they work hard enough here in the city.

There are plenty of food options in Sao Paulo to choose from — trust us, you are definitely not going to be hurting for options. It’s just a matter of thinking what you want to eat. There are a few restaurants that are catering to tourist tastes, but if you really want to say that you experienced the best that the city has to offer, it’s all about going to get authentic Brazilian cuisine done Sao Paulo style. There are brown beans and rice, as well as rice, collard greens, and pork chops. Pork is definitely a local staple, and you’ll see plenty of it. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t find a good steakhouse hiding out there!

Like with food, you’re going to find a lot of options on sleeping accommodations. Of course, with so much to offer, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll do a lot of sleeping. Now is just the right time to really make sure that you get everything in order when it’s time to get your trip underway.

OK, we wrote so much about luxury travel that some of our budget travelers asked us to talk about something related to backpacking. After all, the idea of having to spend a lot of money to go on vacation and see the world just doesn’t hold anymore water anymore. It’s all about being able to have a good time and really get experiences that will create long-lasting memories — long enough to last a lifetime. We really want to make sure that you’re having a good time from start to finish on your backpacking trip, but all of that starts with a good travel backpack. There are plenty of different backpacks out there, and the right one for you will naturally depend on the purpose that you have for the backpack. You don’t want to try to wait till the last minute to actually get a good backpack. It’s something that you might want to order as early as possible so that you can pack everything in advance.

One thing that tends to frustrate people is that packing for a backpacking trip means that you’re going to actually have to make some pretty tough choices. You’re not going to be able to just pack anything that you want. You’re going to actually have to start thinking about everything in terms of importance.
