Train Travel

By Emily

Train travel is much more than just a mode of transportation. Throughout time, “riding the rails” has been portrayed as an exciting and romantic way to travel. Whether you choose the Orient Express or the Northeast Express, train travel has many advantages. It’s a great way to enjoy the countryside in relative comfort and, if you travel on a rail pass, it’s also very economical. As with everything else, train accessibility varies throughout the world. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the major rail systems throughout the world and see how they stack up access-wise. Access varies, depending on the route and the train, but all Amtrak trains have at least one accessible coach car. Amtrak passengers can either travel in their own wheelchair or opt to transfer to a coach seat.

Air Travel

By Emily

Everybody is flying these days. Indeed, air travel is one of the most popular forms of travel. Unfortunately, for people with disabilities, air travel can also be one of the most problematic areas of travel. Perhaps it’s because there are just so many things that can go wrong on any flight. And then again, perhaps it’s due to the mountain of misinformation circulating about accessible air travel.

I believe it’s a combination of both factors; however, I tend to favor the misinformation theory, mostly because of with this growing phenomenon. So, what’s wrong with a little misinformation? Well, if you rely on it and accept it as the truth, you may be in for a rude awakening when you take off on your holiday and find out that it’s incorrect. Admittedly, it can be difficult to ferret out the wheat from the chaff, as far as misinformation is concerned. This situation is further complicated by the fact that you can’t always determine a person’s credibility based on his or her position in the community. Just because somebody is a well respected professional does not mean that they’re also an expert on accessible travel.

Packing Smart for Your Vacation

By Emily

One of the most time consuming aspects of planning a vacation is deciding what to pack. The destination obviously plays a large part in what type of clothes you will pack. A summer trip to the beach means that you will need a bathing suit, shorts, short sleeves, sandals, and possibly a towel. A ski trip, however, means all kinds of water resistance cloths, sweaters, coats, jeans, and thick socks. Below are a few things to keep in mind while packing.

Consider any cultural requirements of the place where you are going. Make sure you do not take anything that violates a cultural standard or is too racy. And do not pack a lot of expensive accessories, like jewelry, as you will want to focus on the trip, not guarding your luggage. Take clothes that make it easy to keep your money on you, whether you pack clothes with more pockets or a good purse or back pack.

By Emily

Cuba is the largest Caribbean island. It is located south of Florida, and north of Jamaica. Cuba has an interesting and colorful history. It’s landscape offers white sandy beaches, and blue shimmering water as well as lush tropical country.

Almost all of Cuba is tourist friendly, although Western Cuba more so. If you prefer the excitement of the city, you might be interested in the capitol, Havana, which has historic architecture, and a booming nightlife. If you’re looking for a more rural destination, try Maria la Gorda. Located in the Pinar del Rio province, Maria la Gorda is a great place for site seeing and snorkeling.

Overcome Excuses Not to Travel

By Emily

Traveling is a great way to learn new things and experience different cultures, but often times, no matter how excited about the prospect, people find reasons to forego the excitement of leaving home. It takes more than a longing to get out of town. The primary excuses for not traveling are money and fear. There is never enough money for anyone; even celebrities do not feel they have earned enough. If you start planning now you will likely find that it isn’t nearly as expensive as you thought.

Start by getting a passport; it will last ten years, buying you time to take the next step. Think of one place you have always wanted to go that is a good place for new travelers, like Europe. Even a short excursion to a touristy place in Canada or Alaska will be an unforgettable experience, and it will not cost you nearly as much as traveling farther abroad. Going somewhere similar to what you are used to will give you an idea of what traveling is like without forcing you to learn a new language or talk to strangers if  these are some of the things that you use to justify not leaving home. It takes away some of the elements of fear if you plan a trip closer to home or more like home, but closer trips are a good way to branch out and get acclimated to new places.

Experience the Unforgettable Night Life of New York City

By Emily

Most people when asked to visualize New York City will start an automatic film in their minds hitting many of the stereo typical highlights: the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Broadway, traffic, and lights. Nearly half those pictures are night scenes. To fully realize those images, tourists need to go out and experience at least a bit of the New York City night life. Before stepping out for a night on the town, always determine what type of food and entertainment are most suited for the evening and plan ahead. Many restaurants, clubs, bars, and entertainment venues have websites for visitors to check out the latest news, events, and offers.

Visitors can start off a night of fun and entertainment by going to one of the many fabulous restaurants with authentic cultural food. Although it could be a delectable and alluring idea to dine in one of the many fancier restaurants, it is not necessary to capture the flavor the genuine New York City cuisine. If the posh restaurants are out of financial consideration, this city can still stun the taste buds with some outstanding food that cannot be found elsewhere. Remember to take tipping into consideration when budgeting for food. With so many people trying to make it in New York City, good tipping is essential.
