TripAdvisor has recently announced its top 5 cities in the world. Topping the list, as their best city was Cape Town followed by Sydney, Machu Picchu, Rio de Janeiro and New York City. The votes were cast by millions of world travellers and this is what they came up with as their favourites.

However, it is worth thinking hard before using this list as your ultimate one. Firstly, people would have only voted for cities they have visited. This means that cities that are not often visited could be much better, but people do not know about them and therefore do not vote. Of course, you may feel that if it was that good, people would have heard of it and they will be wanting to visit it and therefore vote for it. But it depends on what you want from a city.

With these sorts of lists, it is difficult to know what people are using as the criteria to base their vote on. Also you have no idea how many cities they have actually visited and so what form of comparison they have. However, with so many travellers voting it does seem to be quite a good source of information. You will probably find a whole host of similar lists over the Internet, some with similar and some with very different results.

However, trust your instincts. Do research about a place and decide whether it sounds like the sort of place you would like. Think about what there is to do and whether that would be the sort of thing that you and your family would like to spend your time doing. It is also worth thinking about what part of the world they are in and whether that is somewhere you would like to explore. If you are going to be there for a while, then you will need to consider what else there is to do in the area, what other places there are to visit and what there is to do, to keep everyone entertained.

If you are considering a city break, think about why you want one and what you hope to get out of it. Are you thinking of going London because you like the sound of the museums or because your friend said you should go. What do you plan to do there? Where do you plan to stay? How long for? It is good to research a place. It is very different having a city break to a beach holiday for example. With a beach holiday you know there will always be a beach and that is why you are there so you know you will get what you want. However, with a city, they vary so much that you could get a whole host of different things and you need to make sure that you are getting what you want and expect.

So in conclusion, use the lists as a guide and give the planning a lot of thought. Decide what you want form the holiday and match that with the destination rather than doing things the other way around.

When people imagine their dream vacation, a beach is usually one of the primary requirements. While beaches are scattered all over the world and are rather easy to come by, it takes a lot more than sand and water to call a beach beautiful. If your next vacation must include one of the world’s best beaches, continue reading to find out where to start looking.

First things first, Hawaii is no stranger to beautiful beaches, more particularly Poipu Beach, which was recently deemed the best beach in America by the Travel Channel. Boasting the finest golden sand in the western world, Poipu Beach is perfectly suited to a long list of nautical and beach sports.

Moving on, one of the most coveted vacations in the world are those situated in Bora Bora, which make up the south Pacific’s French Polynesia. Here, you will find Matira Beach, known for being the most romantic beach in the world. Because of its adoring characteristics, couples are known to flock to Matira Beach specifically to propose marriage to their significant others.

Matira Beach

A little more on the affordable side of things would be a package vacation to Rio de Janeiro, where travel and accommodations are still lovely, but very inexpensive. The stunning Ipanema Beach is packed with tourists basically all year round as the weather is always tropical in this area of the world. Mexico is another excellent beach resort destination that won’t cost you a whole lot of money. Maroma Beach is among the best beaches here, boasting over five hundred acres of sandy beaches and rainforests combined.

Maroma Beach

France is also known for having some of the world’s greatest beaches for both surfing and relaxing. Biarritz Beach offers two large beaches among a plethora of smaller ones and is only a short drive to Spain, while St. Tropez beach is closer to Nice and Cannes. Situated along the infamous French Riviera, celebrities around the world are known to spend their European getaways on the sandy beaches of St. Tropez.

St. Tropez

When it comes to the most scenic beaches in the world, Africa takes the cake without question. First, Clifton Beach in Cape Town, South Africa is one of the only beaches with a mountain for a backdrop, particularly the Table Mountain. If that doesn’t impress you, then you should be more than satisfied with the completely natural and exotic beauty of Anse de Argent Beach in Seychelles. Located in the Indian Ocean not too far from Madagascar, this tiny island is very secluded and probably the most natural, untouched pieces of land left in the world.

Anse d Argent Beach

One thing all couples should do in 2010 is travel somewhere new and exotic. To assist in narrowing down the number of locations to consider, here are 10 of the coolest and sexiest places to go this year.

Sexy Travel Destinations

1. Caye Caulker, Belize. One of the most famous spots in the Caribbean and synonymous with romance, this is a must visit. Relax on the beautiful beaches, enjoy the view, and meet others out doing the same. This is also a fantastic spot for the reggae lover, with plenty of authentic music.

2. Kauai, Hawaii. Hawaii is one of the first places that springs to mind when romance is mentioned. Kauai provides a more natural getaway for you and your significant other to live a more primal existence for a while.

3. Ischia, Italy. If you are not looking for beaches, this may be your ideal spot. As a more remote and seclude location, you will have more quality alone time. Approximately 20 miles from Naples, Ischia is peaceful and inviting. Take your special someone out for a boat ride and escape from the world for a while. The natural warm spring will give you the ideal romantic evening.

4. Krabi, Thailand. This is the perfect spot for adventuresome couples. Explore new areas either hiking above ground or in caves, or head out into the beautiful waters to snorkel, Krabi has plenty of activities to keep you on the go.

5. Langkawi, Malaysia. Mystical Malaysia can be a marvelous way to get to know the more intrigue side of your partner. Enjoy the exotic architecture on the many shrines and temples as you stroll around the area. Or head out to explore the caves and gorgeous natural rock formations complimented by waterfalls, and spend the evenings on the relaxing beaches.

6. Mykonos, Greece. For those looking to find someone or just to get out and have fun, Mykonos should be the destination. A party town with a vibrant nightlife, Mykonos is bursting with beautiful specimens of both genders playing on the beaches and in the streets.

7. Oahu, Hawaii. With plenty of daytime and nighttime activity, Oahu is a location for those who remember the Hawaii 5-0. The only problem will be finding the time to sleep.

8. Paris, France. It isn’t a cliché, it truly is the most romantic city on Earth. This is one spot that should be on everybody’s top 10 list and is well worth the trip. Even after dark, there is plenty to do between the clubs and restaurants. And of course, very things are as romantic as a day spent wondering through the Louvre.

9. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Another party city full of gorgeous people, Rio de Janeiro is a great place to head with friends. For the prime time to find crowds, watch for the Carnival festival. It is an unmasked party in the streets where everyone can have fun.

10. Vieques, Puerto Rico. Finally, another secluded, romantic spot for those wishing to escape the world. With its numerous beaches spreading for miles, it is an unbeatable place to go to get someone time together. During the right time, some of the fantastic sea creatures will illuminate your walks, along with the moon.

Hitting the slopes for a good ski session or walking through a winter wonderland is all well and good, but what about good old fashioned fun in the sun? Sure, it may be nothing but chilly temperatures and snowfall in your neck of the woods, but these ten locales provide warmer climates and even warmer sun to soak up. Don’t worry about soaking up too much – you can always take some of the sunshine back with you when you’re ready to head home!

While there are many cruises that are selling out quickly, it is possible to get last minute cruise reservations to bring in the New Year right — after all, cruises often have cancellations and it can be a great way to get an amazing vacation at a reduced price that you won’t find advertised widely. With the right New Year’s cruise deal, you’ll save so much money you might even be able to bring a friend!

Below is a list of top travel destinations that should get your brain thinking about all the wonderful things to do on vacation – don’t forget your sunscreen!

1. Prague

Prague

This hot holiday destination is one of the most overlooked cruise destinations — while other popular travel spots like Hawaii and Bali are crowd favorites, there’s plenty of features about a cruise trip to Prague that make it worth a second look. Many cruises offer a long tour of the river that curves around the city, along with a traditional Czech meal course. After all, part of the fun of traveling is tasting exotic dishes that you can’t get at home! The fireworks show over the river is also a sight that has to be observed firsthand. While this location is not as warm as the others on the list, it’s a must add to your list simply for the rich, scenic views of the riverfront.

2. Sydney

Sydney - New Year's Eve

The land down under makes a great cruise destination — if you’re coming from the northern hemisphere, you’ll find that your December and early January will really feel more like June and July. Australia enjoys their seasons in reverse, making this a perfect chance to really get away for some fun in the sun. Once you get to port, there’s plenty of activities to do and culture to see. Don’t forget to stay peeled for the grand fireworks display in Sydney Harbor that happens every year — it’s bigger than just about any other show on earth!

3. Costa Rica

This hidden jewel provides mixes a nice moderate climate with exotic culture and delicious food. On your cruise you’ll get the opportunity to try out a number of different activities, including snorkeling and diving. Beautiful coral and underwater life await you in crystal clear blue waters, but if the water isn’t your thing there’s plenty of fun waiting for you on shore as well. Sightseeing is an absolute must if you’re going to Costa Rica – the lush tropical paradise holds enough unique plants and animals to keep your camera busy for a long time. While it does not get as much attention as other travel destinations around it, Costa Rica is a peaceful island that is definitely worth visiting.

4. Bali

Bali

When an island belongs to a group of over 17 thousand other islands, one thing is certain: that island has to be pretty special to rise to the top! That island is Bali, part of the greater island chain of Indonesia. Bali has long been held as one of the many great treasures of the South Pacific, for numerous reasons. For starters, the unique culture of Bali blends many Hindu elements with the dominant ethnic Balinese culture to create a very unique style in art, music, and entertainment that is like no where else on earth. The food would also fit into this category, benefiting from the ethnic diversity of this beautiful island as well as the unique types of plants that flourish here. History fans will fall in love with the many temples and old architecture that still dot the landscape providing a strong link to the past.

This is one cruise destination where it is absolutely critical to get off the cruise ship and explore the island as much as possible. The people are extremely friendly and since tourism makes up a big part of Bali’s economy, many are more than happy to help a lost tourist find their way again.

5. Antigua

Antigua

With constant pictures of dreary snow and ice, who isn’t ready for the beach? You’ll find plenty of beaches to explore in Antigua, an island that prides itself on providing a top notch luxury experience that will be discussed for months, even years to come.

Snorkeling, scuba diving, and just regular old swimming are all popular water-based activities in Antigua. On land, sightseers will be interested to see the mix of European, Portuguese, and African cultures that blend together here, with a strong British core rising to the top. In addition, many American trends have also made their way into Antigua, so first-time cruise travelers will be comforted to know that those they meet during their stay here will know exactly what to do to help make their stay extremely pleasant. The lush tropical paradise of the island gives way to unique crops and even more unique cuisine choices, and the feeling of being plugged into familiar culture makes Antigua even more appealing. This travel destination is highly recommended for first time cruise travelers that want to experience luxury at its finest from every angle, while being protected by a culture that definitely knows how to take good care of the tourists that visit year around.

6. Auckland or Wellington

Auckland

These two jewels of New Zealand are mentioned as a double feature because it’s really hard to choose between them! Auckland is the largest city, while Wellington holds the proud distinction of being the capital of the country itself. No matter which country you choose you’ll be treated to an interesting blend of food, culture, and architecture. New Zealand ranks very high on just about every list when it comes to the overall cleanliness of the cities, the standard of living, and general happiness of the people. If you’re a sailing fan, Auckland is also known as the City of Sails and features numerous nautical shows and activities to keep you busy. Don’t forget about the rich history of the country itself — the indigenous culture’s influence can still be felt in between all the other modern touches, making New Zealand a perfect cruise destination for New Year’s Eve.

7. Rio De Janeiro

Rio De Janeiro - New years Eve

Carnival isn’t the only time of year when Rio sizzles — the vibrant citizens of Rio know how to make New Year’s Eve light up in a big way! Rio is home to not only world class restaurants, but a fiery, vibrant Latin dance culture that highlights samba along with other dance forms. The diverse mixture of European, African, Caribbean and Latin cultures makes for surprises at every turn — it is almost guaranteed that with everything available to do in Rio, you won’t be bored!

8. Mumbai

Mumbai

This city has a very unique composition — it is actually seven beautiful islands connected to each other. Art fans will definitely appreciate the number of museums and open air art viewings available in the city’s main core.
This beautiful chain of islands so close to the American mainland has been a favorite of many travelers for decades. The warm breeze, lush tropical paradise and constant sun are just some of the reasons why it’s such a crowd favorite. Many cruises traveling during New Year’s Eve offer a real Hawaiian experience, letting people from all walks of life see the best of Hawaiian culture, including authentic fire-pit barbecue and luau shows.
There are beautiful coral reefs and underwater life if you’re interested in exploring the depths of the sea, but there’s also more to do on land. The relative small size of Hawaii’s islands makes it possible to explore multiple islands over the course of your cruise. This is a great destination especially for American tourists that want to get away from home without leaving their home country, ideally getting the best of both worlds.

10. Tahiti
